Tom Sharkey Sr., CLU, ChFC, is the Chairman for Meeker Sharkey & Hurley.
Tom was formerly Vice Chairman of Banc of America Corporate Insurance Agency (BACIA), the nation’s 29th largest insurance brokerage firm according to Business Insurance Magazine (July 2006), with over $70 million of revenues and 300 employees in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York and New England.
Tom was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey and graduated from both Seton Hall Prep and Seton Hall University, where he received a degree of Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy in 1954. In addition, he completed a 13-week Executive Management Program at Harvard Business School.
Before entering the business world, Tom served two years in the Army and three years in baseball with the Detroit Tigers, and left when the hitters solved his curve ball. He started his career as a life insurance salesman in 1958. In 1974, he received his CLU (Certified Life Underwriter) and ChFC (Chartered Financial Consultant) designations from the American College of Insurance.
In 1986, the Elizabeth YMCA awarded Tom the Nicholas J. English Humanitarian Award for community service. He was appointed a Trustee of Seton Hall University in 1986 as well. He has served on the Trinitas Regional Medical Center board for more than 25 years and was designated Irishman of the Year in 1991 by the Union County Friendly Sons. He was also honored by the Seton Hall University Alumni Association as “1994 Distinguished Alumnus of the Year.”
Tom and his wife Ruth are the parents of four children and make their home in Watchung, New Jersey and Palm City, Florida.
